The great room

The long wall was the whole problem and the whole opportunity. Two towers of open shelving and closed storage run floor to ceiling on either side, and the space between them became a built-in banquette upholstered in a blue botanical print. Painted periwinkle against warm cream walls, the cabinetry reads as furniture instead of storage. A brass drum chandelier and two matching sconces keep the light at seated height, so the middle of the room stays soft after dark.

The kitchen

White shaker fronts and quartz counters run the length of the galley, which keeps a narrow room from closing in. The island carries a flush induction cooktop, so the working surface stays flat and uninterrupted. The sink is the detail worth looking at twice: an undermount stainless basin with a wood cutting board that sits down into the rim, a spring-neck faucet, and a separate tap for filtered water.

The bathrooms

Both bathrooms were designed to be used without negotiation. The shower is curbless, so there is nothing to step over. The teak seat folds flat against the wall when it is not needed. The grab bars are solid brass and mounted into blocking, and they match the faucets and the shower trim, which is the only reason they read as fittings instead of equipment. A band of blue tile ties the shower to the tub down the hall, and LED-backlit mirror cabinets put the light on the face rather than the ceiling.

The closets

Four closets, built out rather than bought. Two are finished in white with pull-out wire trays and double-hang rods; two are in a light oak with corner shelf towers. All of the shelving is pinned rather than fixed, so the layout can change without any of it coming out of the wall.

The bedroom

One wall in deep blue behind the bed, everything else left in warm cream. It does the work of a headboard without taking up any floor.
